Jitensha Dorobou Music & Words:
Isumu Teshima

The title means "Bicycle Thief."

As always, RET, Mr. Huruya, and Mr. Masuda greatly helped me to translate this song. Without them, I couldn't have done it so far. -- AI

Toui Mukashi
Futatsuki mae no natsu no hi ni1
Sakamichi wo suberi oriteku futarinori
Zutto fuzaketa mama de
In the distant past;
(I was remembering) on a summer day two months before
Two of us together on my bicycle gliding downhill.
All the way we were frolicking.
Te wo hanashitemo hitori de jouzu ni noreteta
Itsunomanika hitori de jouzu ni noreteta
Now you could skillfully ride the bicycle alone without my helping hands.
I was not sure when you got to be able to do it.
Kami wo kirisugita kimi wa boku ni yatsuatari
Ima wa omoide no naka de shikametsura shiteruyo
Hiza wo surimuite naita furi wo shite nigeta
Totemo atsusugita natsu no kimi wa jitensha-dorobou
As you had your hair cut too short, you took out your anger on me.
Now in my memory, you are making a face at me.
Pretending to weep over a scratch on the knee, you cheated me fairly and got away.
On that too hot summer day, You were the bicycle thief.
Shiroi boushi kagerou no naka de yureteru
Itsu no manika kanojo wa otona ni natteta
A white chapeau was wavering in a heat haze.
I didn't notice but she was no longer a child.
Honki de oikaketa kedo boku wa oitekebori sa
Okiniiri no jitensha wa sonomama kimi no mono
I ran after her seriously but was left way behind.
My favorite bicycle belonged to her from then on.
Kami wo kirisugita kimi wa boku ni yatsuatari
Ima wa omoide no naka de shikametsura shiteru shikametsura shiteruyo
Hiza wo surimuite naita furi wo shite nigeta
Totemo atsusugita natsu no kimi wa jitensha-dorobou
As you had your hair cut too short, you took out your anger on me.
Now in my memory, you are making a face at me, making a face at me.
Pretending to weep over a scratch on the knee, you cheated me fairly and got away.
On that too hot summer day, you were the bicycle thief.

Explanatory Notes
  1. Mukashi ("the distant past") and Futatsuki mae ("two months before") are sung continuously but there is absolutely a gap of time, so I had to divide them in two. Even in Japanese, it is confusing.
